Dilantin (phenytoin) is an epileptic drug that slows down the impulses in the brain responsible for causing seizures. However, this drug is not intended for all kinds of seizures. Your health care provider will need to decide whether your condition should be treated with Dilantin. You need to keep taking this medicine even if you feel well to prevent seizures. Do not take this medicine in smaller or larger quantities than prescribed by your doctor. Dilantin side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, nervousness, itching or mild skin rash, joint pain, constipation. Taking such drugs as stomach acid reducers, sedatives, disulfiram, sulfa drugs, carbamazepine, sucralfate, molindone, phenobarbital can affect the efficiency of the treatment. Do not start taking Dilantin before talking to your doctor if you are using any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements or preparations. Some medical conditions can interfere with the efficiency of you treatment, including diabetes, liver disease, porphyria or vitamin D deficiency. Do not take this drug if you are pregnant of breastfeeding as this drug can cause harm to an unborn baby.
